This is a vintage wooden coal scuttle, dating to the early to mid-20th century (likely 1920s–1940s), once used to store coal beside the fireplace. Crafted from richly stained mahogany-toned hardwood, it features a brass carry handle on the lid and a small brass knob to open the front-hinged flap. Inside sits the original removable metal liner, complete with side handles for lifting, it is a little rusted so its modern day use may be different.
The scuttle has gently curved side supports, giving it a solid, traditional fireside look. A brass handle remains fixed to the back panel for a spade/shovel to sit - not included. The brass handle and knob are in great vintage condition. The wood shows some surface wear, scratches, and patina consistent with age and use, which only add to its vintage character, it has been cleaned and stained. The liner has surface rust, so this piece is now best suited for kindling, firelighters, or as a decorative log box rather than for coal storage.
This would make a perfect fireside accessory, period décor piece, or a charming way to store kindling beside a woodburner or open fire. It is a superb piece of antiquity and charm - super practical for all sorts of storage next to your fire.
