This striking signed print by Robert Taverner depicts the dramatic rolling landscape near Beachy Head, Sussex, one of England’s most iconic coastal landmarks. The scene captures windswept fields, distant cottages, and grazing sheep, framed by bold black linework and subtle washes of green. It is a wonderful combination of expressive drawing and modernist illustration style, bringing a fresh mid-century feel to a timeless English subject.

Robert Taverner (1920-2004) was a well known English printmaker, illustrator and art educator. He was actually head of Printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design - which makes this lithograph of Beachy Head which is just down the road from Eastbourne, all the more sentimental as he would have known the area well.

Taverner exhibited widely and some of his works are actually held in public collections in V&A museum and British Museum. His work was particularly collectible in the mid 20th century. It is not clear when this lithograph was completed as it is not dated BUT it is signed and titled by Taverner.

This appears to be a hand coloured lithograph by Robert Taverner, original print, but I am not 100% sure. It is supremely high quality. Titled “Down at Beachy Head” in pencil beneath the image, showcases his eye for rural texture and the sweep of the South Downs countryside.

The piece is presented in a soft grey-green painted wooden frame with cream mount, which complements the earthy tones of the print and gives it a rustic yet stylish presence. The frame has a lightly distressed finish, in keeping with the age and character of the artwork, and the whole piece is ready to hang.

Condition is very good overall, with the print itself remaining clear and bold, showing only gentle toning appropriate to age. The mount is clean with only minimal age marks, and the frame is solid and attractive with light surface wear that enhances its vintage charm.

It is definitely ready to hang and is an exceptional painting to own. This print would be perfect for lovers of English landscape art, Sussex heritage, South Downs scenery, and mid-century illustration, as well as those seeking distinctive wall art with local historical resonance. It sits beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
