This charming and classic mid-century drop-leaf table with integrated folding chairs is often referred to as a space-saver or folding dining set. These were very popular from the 1960s through to the 1980s, especially for small flats or caravans. However, they are also perfect for larger houses as a useful additional seating arrangement for large parties and family gatherings.

The tabletop is a laminated wood veneer over particle board, which was very common in mid-century furniture. I cannot identify the wood used for the base or seats, but it is a hardwood and remains very sturdy. The table features noticeable rounded edges on the leaves, giving it a soft, organic shape. Leaf support arms swing out from the central frame to hold the extended surfaces securely.

The design is essentially a box frame with fixed vertical slats for chair storage. The chairs have a matching slatted design with a fold-flat mechanism. The slats are fixed into side rails, likely joined with screws or dowels, and the frames are made from solid wood.

The piece retains its original wood varnish or lacquer, likely a semi-gloss finish, which has aged naturally. It could benefit from light refinishing or a treatment with teak oil to restore its appearance, as there are visible signs of surface wear. However, it remains intact and sturdy. If you prefer a charming vintage table for an active household, you can leave it as is—any additional wear will simply add to its character without the worry of maintenance.
