Wonderful reminders and depictions of life in the 19th century along The Thames Small Kent villages and towns using the river for their own purposes and livelihoods. Original paintings by S Owen, engraved carefully by W B Cooke and then printed by Cooke too. Part of a collection titled "The Thames: Graphic Illustrations of Seats, Villas, Public Buildings, and Picturesque Scenery on the Banks of that Noble River." printed in 1819. Prints are wonderful and bright still, but there is foxing in places and on the mounts. Both in glazed vintage wood and gilt frames.
Covering Northfleet, Erith and Belvidere along The Thames. One print slightly stormier than the other but clearly illustrating life for folk along the river. Cooke wanted to capture the scenic and architectural landmarks along the Thames, providing valuable insights into the landscapes and structures of that era. They still exist today for us to enjoy!
Hand coloured in water colour after the engravings were printed in black and white.
The vintage frames are classic wood and gilt frames. They have knocks and bumps and bits missing. But they are charming and can still be used. They do need wire seeing too on one. The overall foxing and marks on the prints and mounts are clear but it also provides a real air of vintage authenticity - these are not prints, they are likely more than 100yrs old so nothing surprising. They certainly give these pictures an antique loo.
Great for a gift for someone who lives in the areas, or someone who love riverlife, maybe someone who has a barge or riverboat. Or someone who loves old river scenes!
