Not knowing anything about a Mrs Gatty, I did a bit of research on Margarate Gatty (1809-1873) and can she that she was an influential children's write and scientist. This portrait of her is very clear and intriguing in itself. It is Victorian, but what I am not sure about is whether or not it is an original ink drawing or a print. The reason I question it is because of the white markers and lines. Could these be from the artist covering up some errors? Alas, it may also be a print of a previous drawing. Mrs Gatty was an illustrator herself, so one wonders if this was a self portrait? She spent most of her life in Essex, but as some point did convalesce in Hastings, Sussex - and this picture was framed in Battle, Sussex. A happy coincidence? She wrote children's books about nature and science, and used them to indirectly challenge Darwin's Origin of a Species. She also collected a vast array of marine builogy items which now belong to St Andrew's University.
This pen and ink drawing is very detailed and you can tell from it that Mrs Gatty was not a woman to take lightly - a serious expression on her face, she was no doubt a strong character pushing boundaries in a man's world. As mentioned there are these surprising white marks and a few signs of spotting on the cream backing paper, and some cut marks in the top right. The mount is a different cream and I think quite old. It too has a few minor marks but nothing to worry about. The frame is very 1970s, black wood with gold inlay - goes very well with the picture. It is ready to hang and is glazed - the frame is in great condition with a few minor marks commensurate with age. All in all, a great collectors piece for scientists, literature lovers, childrens book lovers, portraits, Victoriana.
