A beautifully preserved 1930s oak fire screen, hand-painted with a delicate floral study of foxgloves in soft golden tones, set against richly figured tiger oak grain. This charming piece captures the English art deco era and early cottage revival style, blending craftsmanship with rustic natural beauty.

The screen is made from solid oak with original cast metal feet, designed to provide both stability and subtle decorative appeal. The hand painted floral motif — likely executed in oil or enamel paint — has mellowed gracefully with age, sitting harmoniously within the warm honey-brown patina of the oak. It’s a fine example of the interwar British tradition of hand-decorated domestic furnishings that celebrated both artistry and utility.

This type of screen would have been placed in front of an unused fireplace during warmer months, acting as both a decorative and practical piece to soften the hearth area. Today, it makes a beautiful accent in a country cottage, period home, or vintage-inspired interior, bringing warmth, colour, and authenticity to a sitting room or bedroom.

In very good vintage condition with some light surface wear and mild age patina on the metal feet, consistent with its 90-year age. The metal finish may be restorable or can be left as is with its aged look. The screws can be tightened slightly (they are a little rusted) if the legs are a little loose after dispatch. They can of course presumably be removed for the restoration if you wish. But tbh I think they are charming as is. The wood retains a lovely sheen and depth of grain. It has very minor signs of age and wear on the surface and edges and decoration.

A genuine piece of early 20th-century English craftsmanship — timeless, romantic, and full of nostalgic charm.
