A fine late Victorian to early 20th century mahogany Sutherland table, crafted in richly toned solid mahogany with distinctive cabriole legs and a practical under-shelf secured by iron brackets, giving the whole piece great stability and presence. These tables are much loved for their versatility, folding down to an incredibly slim profile so they can be tucked away almost anywhere, while opening out to provide a generous surface for dining, writing, or display. The design makes them one of the most practical antique forms, combining elegance with genuine day-to-day usefulness.

The craftsmanship of this table sets it apart. The oak mechanism that supports the folding leaves demonstrates the attention to quality that marked the best late Victorian cabinet work, marrying strength with smooth operation. The mahogany itself is beautifully figured, with a rich patina that has developed over more than a century, deepening the warmth of the surface. The under-shelf is both decorative and functional, a hallmark of better quality Sutherland tables, while the graceful cabriole legs lend the piece a subtle formality.

A fascinating detail is the plaque affixed underneath, which reads Shepherd and Barker Ltd, House Furnishers, Eloff and Jeppe Streets, Johannesburg. This suggests that while the table was almost certainly made in the United Kingdom, it was exported to South Africa for sale through one of the major furnishing houses there, a reminder of the global reach of British furniture manufacture during this period. That provenance gives the piece added interest and historical resonance, linking it not only to Victorian domestic life in Britain but also to the colonial export trade.

Condition is very good overall, especially considering the age. The base shows only light surface marks and can be described as close to excellent. The top retains a fine finish with attractive figuring, though as with any antique of over 100 years, there are idiosyncrasies—minor blemishes, a few small divots, and some surface markings that are visible on close inspection. These are shown in the photographs and do not detract from the table’s charm; rather, they are part of the character that comes with genuine age and use.

This is a versatile and elegant piece, easily placed in living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, or studies. It works equally well as a side table, lamp table, or occasional dining table, folding neatly down when not in use and extending to provide practical surface space when required. With its fine quality timber, practical form, and interesting provenance, it represents an opportunity to own a piece of antique furniture that is both beautiful and genuinely useful.
