This is an attractive vintage oak effect coal scuttle bin dating from the 1950s, showcasing the simple yet elegant lines. The cabinet is crafted from board with an oak effect veneer, with a lovely warm medium brown patina that highlights the distinctive grain of the wood. The front features a plain recessed panel with a shaped wooden handle, and the sides are unadorned, emphasizing the honest, utilitarian design typical of mid century fireside accessories. Inside, it retains the original galvanised metal liner with carry handle, used historically for storing and transporting coal or kindling to the fireplace. The liner fits neatly into the tilting front door, which opens and closes smoothly on its hinges, demonstrating the piece’s enduring functionality despite its age.

The condition is generally good for its age, with some expected surface wear, small scratches, and marks commensurate with over 70 years of domestic use. There are some areas of scuffing and light finish wear along the edges, and the liner shows old soot residues and tarnish consistent with frequent fireside duty. There are no structural issues and the door mechanism remains secure and practical for storage.
