Vintage 1940s Oak Wooden Storage Box – Signed & Dated 1947 - early mid century design, lovely simple lines, toy box, vintage storage box

This is a beautifully hand-crafted oak wooden box, dating from the early to mid-20th century (1947). Its solid construction, warm oak grain, and traditional joinery make it both a practical storage solution and a collectible piece of vintage furniture. It has lovely solid oak frame, top and legs, and with oak ply sides. It is in wonderful condition and has the added charm of having hand written name and date on the inside bringing to life some of its history.

The personal inscription inside the base says “Ernest ‘Tiny’ Holman, 1947” – giving this piece a unique provenance and human connection to the post-war era. I did look up the name of Ernie Holman and it did bring up the details of a few people - perhaps the new owner of this chest/box will investigate further.

This chest/box is very likely British made. It is a simple, functional design with clean lines – reflecting Arts & Crafts and mid-century influences. It would be perfect as a blanket chest, keepsake box, side table, or storage chest for books, magazines, or textiles. Strong enough to perch on too - if you're not too heavy of course.

It really is in excellent vintage condition with a warm patina and some light wear consistent with age. Looks like at some point there was a split, but this has been well mended. It has been lightly sanded, cleaned and stained to bring it some warmth and glow. It has certainly cleaned up well and whilst not perfect, no vintage item ever is, it can certainly be used as is.
