This striking vintage wall mirror dates to the 1920s and features a classic shield shape typical of this era, blending both functionality and design elegance. Crafted with a beautifully bevelled edge mirror and housed in a subtly decorative wooden frame with fine inlay details.
It would have originally been part of a grand dressing table, often referred to as a “duchess mirror,” but the shield shape also lends it well to standalone wall display. The holes where the original brass axis movement was positioned have been filled. As such, the frame is quite deep to house this giving it a solid quality aesthetic.
The warm honey-brown mahogany grain is complemented by delicate linear inlay work that gives the frame a refined and timeless appearance. Unlike more flamboyant mirrors of earlier periods, this piece exemplifies understated early century charm.
The mirror itself is original and displays the attractive visual depth of aged glass, with gentle signs of wear consistent with its age, subtle clouding and light foxing in places, only adding to its authentic character. I would say for the age the mirror is in very good condition. The back retains the original wooden panel and hanging wire. The wire is sturdy, but as with all vintage mirrors, we recommend checking and reinforcing it before wall mounting.
This piece is in very good vintage condition. There are some expected age-related surface marks and light scuffs to the wooden frame, mostly along the top edge and sides, which do not detract from its presence or functionality. No chips or cracks in the glass. The mirror is structurally solid and ready to hang.
Perfect for an entrance hallway, vintage-themed bathroom, characterful bedroom, or above a console table, this mirror is both decorative and practical. It makes a superb addition to any interior with a love of mid-century design, classic British craftsmanship, or retro Art Deco influences. A real conversation piece that speaks of refined elegance without being ostentatious.
