An almost psychedelic aesthetic—this wall cupboard is really rather wonderful!
It is thin, so if you're short on space, this is perfect for you.
What makes it particularly beneficial for a kitchen or bathroom is the extra storage and its almost zany décor if you have a sense of humour decor!
It seems to have a very unusual history. The door and front frame are definitely Victorian, but it appears to have been repurposed into a cupboard in the 1970s. I say this because the shelf supports—four of which have been replaced with screws—are the plastic type commonly used in the '70s and early '80s.
The backing looks to be a later addition, probably from 10 to 20 years ago. The shelves are plywood, covered in sticky-back plastic.
Just below the ends of the main cornice, you’ll see two holes. No, these are not for ventilation! Originally, the restorer installed two corner braces at the top for wall attachment—one of which is now missing. These holes were actually just for access with a long screwdriver, really quirky feature.
I don't quite understand the very complicated method used when a simpler solution would have been to drill holes in the back or attach brackets to the side. Either way, you will need to add a hanging method.
The top also appears to be a more recent addition, though I believe the sides and cornice are original, meaning the exterior is all old.
For some reason, two screws are protruding through the top into the cavity above the cupboard.
I’ve explained this as best I can. The main thing is that the cupboard is very solid. You will need to sort out a hanging method, and you may want to consider repositioning the screws at the top.
That’s easier to describe than the actual finish, which appears to have been a shabby chic project for someone! It features a mix of colors—pink on the front, turquoise on the left-hand side, and yellow and pink on the right. The panels are adorned with delightful heart-shaped decoupage, while the surrounding mouldings are painted a darker pink.
This certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but for a few discerning customers with a love for shabby chic and bohemian styles, this is a gem!
The door opens and closes well.
The exterior is generally in very good condition, though there are two filled holes near the lower hinge.
