Upcycled Vintage Indian Tea Chest – Unique Rustic Storage, Planter, or Side Table

A superb upcycled vintage Indian tea chest. I remember, back in the late 70s, moving house several times and seeing these being used for packing. They were always a favourite because they are lightweight yet very sturdy.

I’ve included images of all sides so you can see the various printed details. One of the most charming features is the "It Pays to Buy Good Tea" motif. It’s fascinating to imagine that when these chests were being handled for tea transport in the latter part of the 20th century, no one could have predicted they’d be upcycled into something unique and decorative. This practice, much like with old wooden wine boxes, has become a wonderful way to give these pieces a second life.

The plywood has been carefully cleaned, sanded, and given a polished finish. The inside has been painted white for a clean, fresh look. On one side, there’s an area where the outer layer of plywood was over-sanded, creating a beautifully aged and worn effect that adds character. The metal corners have also been cleaned and polished, though a few areas remain slightly loose—just a reminder of the chest's utilitarian origins.

This piece could serve as a quirky side table or look fantastic with plants displayed on top. Alternatively, turn it the other way round, and it would make a fantastic planter for a statement plant, a unique umbrella stand, or even a place to store your boots. A versatile and charming addition to any space!
