What a treat - early 1800s Henry Alken engravings/drawings published as prints (which were hand painted) by S & J Fuller in London in 1837. Delightful summation of carriage driving entitled : "The Comforts of being drove like a Gentleman" and "The Consequences of being drove by a Gentleman". A humorous take on what gentlemen could get up to. Both prints are handpainted and printed on brown card. They are then framed in light wood vintage frames. Fascinatingly, these prints were framed by G.C.T Van Dorp & Co in Semarang which turns out to be a town in Indonesia, a previous Dutch colony; there are labels on the back of both confirming this. The one print is still glazed and the print is in vgc; the other has lost its glass and has subsequently suffered some scratching particularly to the left. Both have string for hanging. The light wood is slightly different shades at present but would likely oil up to the same colour.
Quirky interesting comical takes from the 1800s. Prints which have travelled the world!
