A charming Victorian pitch pine church pew, given a fresh look with a shabby chic finish, the original finish was compromised with various marks couldn't be concealed, I decided to enhance its appeal by painting it.

I applied two undercoats followed by three topcoats of Farrow & Ball Wimborne White estate eggshell, resulting in a soft, elegant sheen. To add character, some edges were sanded to expose the wood beneath, giving it a contemporary, rustic charm.
The pew is both attractive and versatile, perfect for a large house. Whether placed around a dining table, in an entryway, or as a practical bench to sit on while tying your laces, it’s a standout piece that blends timeless style with modern appeal.
Regarding its condition, there are a couple of notable imperfections:
Right-Hand Side: A historic issue with dry rot affected a large area at the bottom. The loose wood was removed years ago, and I thoroughly cleaned the area using a drill with a metal brush attachment. The pitch pine—a very hard wood—remains solid, with at least 30 millimetres of strong material intact. The structural integrity of this side has not been compromised.
Left-Hand Side: Some panelling on the bottom section is missing, likely due to damp exposure in the past. Any dry rot has been addressed. Additionally, there’s a piece of wood missing under the seat on this end. Despite these flaws, the craftsmanship is so robust and of such high quality that the strength and usability of the bench remain unaffected.
These imperfections, consistent with the shabby chic style, add a sense of history and rustic charm to the piece. The main seating area, backrest, and thick wood construction are all in excellent condition, as seen in the images. This beautifully painted pew is a wonderful blend of tradition and modern design, ready to make a statement in your home.
