I would imagine this fire screen was made in the 1920s. It looks to me like at some point this has been stripped as oak was normally stained a dark colour during this. Indeed you can see the darker stain to the aperture off the frame and to the outside edges of the fluted parts of the frame.
It is either had a very light clear polish applied or there is actually no finish to it so it has a lovely rustic feel to it.
Beautiful carvings to the top and the delightful turned columns with finials to the top.
It has a boarded backing
The material screen appears to be an antique tapestry; woven needlework of fine quality. The scene it is depicting appears to be continental - Spanish perhaps given the woman's clothing on the right hand side. It appears to be a classic village scene, horse, dog, young man, man on horse, women etc. The young man may be someone of importance as someone is humbly kneeing before him. Who knows what they are discussing? The colours are muted - browns of different shades. I don't think this was a coloured tapestry, I think it was always like this - but I could be wrong. The tapestry is in vgc - yes there are the odd markings on it, but nothing that isn't commensurate with age. Please zoom in on photos. It goes brilliantly with the old wooden screen framework - the whole ensemble is attractive and olde worlde - very much a celebration of antique fire ware.
