Superb Imposing Oriental Carved Serpent Standard Lamp.
This top quality standard lamp it would appear was made in the early 20th century. The carving depicts a serpent or dragon like creature and the remaining majority of the carving foliage. The serpent carving begins approximately 6 inches up from the turned base and The fire it is breathing is completed approximately 8 inches from the top
The lamp spits at the middle and will be sent as such. This was always the case although the original plates that would have bound the two together are missing and have been replaced by what looks like some simple copper tubing. I can only imagine the lamp has been knocked over at some point they have become dislodged and been replaced. Therefore the join is not 100% sturdy but absolutely fit for purpose and you could augment with some thin wood maybe to make it 100% robust but I really would not bother I'm just saying for the purposes of clarity.
I'm not sure what the word is it is certainly a hardwood and as I would imagine it was made in the Far East and it will be a wood from that particular area.
It has a tough glossy finish presumably designed to be a lacquer effect. There are a few surface marks and some tiny white spots, presumably paint, to the base which you can see in the image is just about. Sits on bun feet. There is a small piece of wood missing at the join that has been stained in and I have shown in the images.
The wire seems to be from the 60s or 70s, the bayonets and plug probably the 90s. It works fine however you may well want to upgrade the electrics or get it checked by an electrician.
This is an absolutely superb standard lamp of high quality and superb workmanship.
