Stunning Painted Black Late Victorian Central European Coal Scuttle Dog Motif with Shovel
Showing here is a stunning late Victorian central European coal scuttle.
The black painted finish you see seems to be the original paint which is a really rather wonderful feature to it.
Underneath the black the undercoat was red, some of the black has worn and the red underneath shows through which gives a wonderful shabby chic contemporary look and adds some real character and authenticity.
It is a beautiful shape and design very much commensurate with the late Victorian fashion. There is a good weight to it adding some substance.
The shovel sits perfectly to the pocket at the back.
The inside lining pulls out with a curved motion. Although original, this has been upgraded at some point and there is a fresh undercarriage of metal to it so it is still absolutely fit for purpose.
I don't really know what the dog motif is all about other than it adds a real quirkiness to the piece, however you do quite often see dog and cats decor on Victorian interior decoration from Europe.
All in all this is a beautiful piece and actually very well preserved.
Functional and yet aesthetically very pleasing.
I have given it a good brush out, however there will be some coal dust you may want to clear out further or presumably if you're going to use it for coal it doesn't really matter.
I would think these things are absolutely perfect as well, now coal isn't used so much use for kindling and modern composite burning bricks etc.
