This is a truly outstanding and charming early 20th-century fire screen with a distinctive and unique aesthetic. At some point, it was painted black, and later partially stripped back, likely using wire wool and metal polish. This process has resulted in a captivating aged and shabby chic appearance, where remnants of black paint beautifully contrast with highlighted brass tones, creating a striking interplay of hues.
The design features delightful Art Nouveau inspired decorations at both the top and bottom, adding an elegant touch to its vintage appeal. Unusually, the screen is supported by two iron feet at the front and a single foot at the back, allowing it to lean backward intentionally for stability. The mirror, held securely by iron straps, has no backing—suggesting it never did—and showcases its original glass with some spotting and wear, which only enhance its antique charm.
There is some wear and ageing on the iron metal frame nothing significant, but just to make you aware.
What truly sets this fire screen apart is the superb hand-painted oil decoration of roses on the mirror, a stunning and unique feature that elevates it beyond its contemporaries. Rustic and aged, with a hand-nurtured part-restoration, this piece is utterly charming and exceptionally attractive, blending functionality with artistic beauty.
Just to let you know that for safe delivery purposes, I will send the single foot at the back loose with its fittings. You will need to reattach with spanner. Very easy to do.
