Two marvellous vintage maritime prints on board likely from the 1970s, maybe 80s. Depicting the famous maritime and naval scenes of the 17th century by Dutch artist Willem van de Velde Le Jeune (Jnr). He was an incredibly influential artist, who covered naval and maritime scenes at the time, most notably scenes from the Dutch Anglo war period. He actually left Holland moved to Britain under the patronage of King Charles II. His art pieces were incredibly precise and he was a leader in the Realism painting style. They formed examples of historic significance, not just illustrations for enjoyment. These two paintings are captured on board as if they were real, and framed in quality wooden and gilt frames. Ready to hang.
The two paintings – one of The Port of Amsterdam and one of a Battle in the North Sea (Le Port d’Amsterdam and Combat Naval Dans La Mer Du Nord) are truly lovely and detailed. The vibrancy of the paintings are still showing in these prints. You can smell the canonfire and the hear the voices. The prints are small depictions of the originals but still show the tremendous detail of his original works. The prints are in excellent condition.
The frames are very 20th century – but mid to late – I would hesitate to suggest 1970s/80s. They are in great condition too. Wooden with a gilt inner frame. Hardboard backing (which the print is on) with string for hanging. The prints are helpfully labelled on the rear by the previous owner who obviously treasured and looked after these prints. Slightly different finished sizes of the prints, but actually very similar in size.
A great set of two lovely vintage prints. Quality pieces in themselves, but also obviously capturing some real masterpieces from hundreds of years ago. The prints even show some brush stroke technique making them look more real than they are. Both ready to hang (no glass as they have always been).
