This is a marvellous find. It is an early/mid century print of a painting titled The Sloop Inn, and painted by Brean, possibly in 1669 (although that might be the date of the setting). A wonderful original painting signed by Brean and depicting this very old inn (dates back to 1312) in Cornwall, and which has featured in many paintings.
The painting clearly displays live in a much smaller and older St Ives. Not many holidaymakers are captured - just the village folk going about their day and the inn captured on the right - a place many sailor, farmer, worker would have visited.
What is more wonderful though, is that this is a very old print of the painting and it is framed in a really lovely vintage frame. The print is old as is the frame - you can see some aged details on the back confirming the print was part of a Nature Splendour Series, and the name of the painting is captured. Original backing and hooks, but has had some tape and new string applied.
The frame itself is wooden, rustic looking, with a green inner strips. The frame almost has a retro feel about it, but it is much older this - see the back! Goes incredibly well with the colours in the painting. All oranges, greens, browns. It is overall a very lovely combination - super ensemble.
This would be a wonderful addition for a home in Cornwall, St Ives? or a gift for someone who has moved away from Cornwall or moving to Cornwall. It is a wonderful historic depiction of earlier times. A good size and ready to hang. Would be smashing on the wall!
