A beautiful pair of aged brass fire dogs with plenty of character.
Originally designed to support a fire basket, these can still serve that purpose—the iron supports measure 31 cm in length and 14 cm in height. They are also ideal as practical and decorative stands for resting fire irons.
I have left them as found, as many people prefer aged fireplace items that don’t require tedious polishing! The iron sections have surface rust but no erosion, and the bases show remnants of their original silvery finish. These are very heavy, solid pieces.
The brass finials on top have developed a dark patina but could be polished if desired.
I would date them to the mid-20th century.
Fire dogs (or andirons) were traditionally used to support firewood or a fire basket, allowing better airflow for efficient burning. They can also serve as decorative and practical stands for resting fire irons.
