Showing here are a couple of outstanding central European constructed chairs. I cannot vouch for the country suffice to say I bought these at the Ardingly antiques fair and it was from one of those large container dealers that come in from central Europe.
A pair of beautiful chairs almost with an art nouveau look to them. I'm not sure what type of wood they're made from although it appears to be a hard wood of some type with a dark stain which I think is original.
To look at, apart from some surface wear and marks to the wood the condition is very good. I think the upholstery is old but not original but very well preserved with no obvious faults. To the underside you can see where the original covering could possibly have been attached as there are numerous small holes which would suggest were previously home to tacks! (no definitely not worm!) The braiding around the oval cushioned rest to the top is gold and appears to have some fine gold metal thread interspersed with the fabric.
At some point they obviously wobbled and if you look to the underside you will see there have been some repairs. One chair has had a couple of metal corner braces applied to the front and a couple of long strong screws to the back too brace the rear of the chair. Second chair again has two large screws that have braced the back.
As with any chair of this age there is always an element of ‘give’ as over time the joints loosen slightly and leads to a very minor wobble. However, they really are fit for purpose and due to thinness of the legs and back would always have some movement. For the age and design sturdy enough but certainly not rock solid.
The beauty of these chairs is however the wonderful and stylish design. I would imagine you will probably just use them as occasional chairs in a hallway or in the bedroom or a corner of a living room.
