What a wonderful pastel drawing of a Pekinese, Pekingese, dog by Valerie Miles. Very Tricki Woo, All creatures Great and Small like. Completed in 1994. Stunning depiction by this famous Welsh artist. Valerie Miles was born at Aberkenfig in south Wales and studied at the Cardiff School of Art between 1932 and 1938. Miles obtained several commissions to illustrate children's books and also painted portraits of children and adults plus animal paintings, most notably of dogs. She was an active member of, and exhibitor with the Pekinese Society of Wales. Her landscape paintings were centred around her home at Gwaelod-y-Garth near Cardiff. Miles was a member of the South Wales Art Society and participated in a number of their group exhibitions, in exhibitions at the Oriel Cardiff and in Arts Council of Wales shows.
This gorgeous drawing is simply gorgeous - a classic little dog with a lot of attitude, strutting its stuff. This portrait is a signed in 1994 which sadly was just shortly before the death of Miles and was prepared for a show in 1994 by Miles. It would be a marvellous gift for someone who collects animal portraits or who indeed has a Pekingese. The frame is of the 90s era; light wood and gilt edging. Great double mount in green and cream. Grey brown paper for the actual drawing. All of which bring out the greys, browns and creams of the drawing. Have a good look at the photos but this vintage artwork is in excellent conditin. Ready to hang. Minor marks, and minor wear to the frame.
