A striking vintage maritime watercolour painting depicting the historic Nao Victoria, one of the most famous ships of the Age of Exploration. Rendered in delicate washes of blue, grey and soft pink with fine ink outlines, the work captures the intricate rigging, masts and flags of this 16th century Spanish carrack with an expressive and atmospheric touch. The artist’s signature, Zaun Richards, can be seen in the lower right corner, together with the ship’s name inscribed on the lower left hand side.
Presented in a clean contemporary white frame with protective glazing, the artwork has a crisp nautical appeal and would suit both modern and traditional interiors. The subject matter makes it ideal for collectors of maritime history, lovers of sailing and tall ships, or anyone wishing to bring a seafaring theme into their décor.
The Nao Victoria was the first ship to successfully circumnavigate the glove in 1519-1522. There is a replica touring ship which recently was docked in Chatham which may have inspired this watercolour of the Nao Victoria bY Richards. Presumably a very accomplished local or regional painter in the area who has done a fabulous job depicting this ship.
Condition is very good, with the watercolour paper clean and the colours fresh. The frame is sturdy and ready to hang, showing only light handling wear appropriate to age.
This signed watercolour of the Nao Victoria is both decorative and historically resonant, a wonderful addition to a coastal home, office, or sailing enthusiast’s collection.
