This is a truly serene and peaceful original piece of art. A water colour painted by the artist, G. Alexander, of the Valley of Rydal in Cumbria, Lake District. Somewhere between Grasmere and Ambleside. An absolutely wonderful depiction of the River Rothay which is known for its gentle flow, scenic beauty, and importance to the landscape of the Lake District, contributing to the tranquil charm of the valley and its surrounding areas.
The painting is well executed with fine detail in the trees, the cattle and sheep, and the village in the background. It is not a complex painting, but rather presents its wonderful landscape matter to us in a simple, easy to appreciate manner. The painting is signed and has a lovely handwritten label on the rear (which interestingly states Rydale is in S Yorkshire rather than Cumbria).
What I have learnt about the artist : George Alexander (1882–1951) was a British artist known for his landscape watercolours, particularly of the Lake District. His painting of the "Valley of Rydal" exemplifies his focus on capturing the natural beauty of this region. While detailed biographical information is limited, his works have been recognized in art circles, with some pieces appearing in auctions and collections. His contributions add to the rich tradition of British landscape painting, highlighting the serene and picturesque qualities of the English countryside.
This painting is in excellent condition. It is in a thick card mottled cream mount, with hand drawn borders around it. Delightfully framed in a moulded gesso, gilt wooden frame. The original frame I would imagine, dating to pre 1950. Although the back of the frame has been replaced (possibly when the label was re-written). I do think though the mount and frame are the originals. The frame has some broken gesso although not much and there are occasional marks on the mount. It is however in excellent vintage condition and would be a much admired and marvelled piece ready to hang piece in your home.
