Original Antique Pears Soap Advertising Poster – “A Winters Evening” by Edward Frederick Brewtnall 1908 in 1900s heavy wooden glazed frame

A wonderful piece of advertising history. This antique print from the Pears Soap promotional collection of 1908 was reproduced as a chromolithograph for wider distribution and public available – well not too widely, these posters and prints were mostly printed and made available to the rising middle classes. Often accompanying soap purchases or even as part of the Pears Album. Original artworks like this one by Brewtnall (completed late 19th century) represented elegance and refinement which suited the Pears brand.
This particular print is truly vintage and has been saved and safely framed in a magnificent wooden and gilt metal frame. Actually quite an outstanding wooden frame – original wooden backing to boot – quite likely from the early 1900s to match the issuance of this print.
The print is sadly not in pristine condition, although pretty close – it has a small tear in top right corner, some staining including damp marks at the bottom in the cream ‘mount’, scratching in places. As it is, you cannot see the full labelling. I have a feeling someone has bought a new mount and reframed the print in its original frame.
With regards to the frame – wow is all I can. Magnificent solid wooden frame with gilt inner frame beneath the glazing. Yes marks and signs of wear, but with its original backing it is truly splendid. Early 1900s.
