Mid-century watercolour of Piddinghoe and The Ouse, Lewes, Sussex by W Playfoot, glazed vintage frame and mount - excellent condition

This is a wonderful vintage water colour from the mid 1900s. Painted by W. Playfoot of Kent and is a lovely landscape and riverscape depiction of The Ouse in Piddinghoe, which is a small hamlet near Lewes and Newhaven in East Sussex. The Ouse flows into the English Channel in Newhaven and snakes past the South Downs - as depicted in this lovely painting. Playfoot is a British artist, there isn't much information about him, but he did tend to paint landscape scenes of local places. Presumably he visited the area from Kent. In a lovely wooden frame with gilt detail, thck card cream mount and glazing. Ready to hang.

What is intriguing about this painting is the fact that Playfoot painted it and then it was put up for sale for £48 back in the mid 1900s. So the price it is listed at today is a bargain! Playfoot did however misname the river in the photo - he called it The Stour, but it is the The Ouse. There is a River Stour in Kent, but no Piddinghoe in Kent. He probably had the Kent river on his mind when he labelled this painting up. It clearly is the Ouse as you can see the South Downs, and even today, boating on a large pond in Piddinghoe is a popular past time.

Watercolour is lovely and very accurate of the area. It has aged well and is in a thick cream card mount which too has aged well although slightly aged colour now after 50+ years. The frame is in excellent condition as is the glass, with only minor marks commensurate with age. Ready to hang.

Delightful painting which would be a wonderful gift for someone from Kent or Sussex - and most certainly for someone who knows The Ouse and the wider Lewes District.
