This incredibly impressive and charming antique Victorian pole screen dates from the mid to 20th century and is a fine example of period craftsmanship combined with decorative artistry. The piece features a solid mahogany frame with a rich, warm patina and elegant cabriole legs joined by a turned stretcher for stability. The embroidery is mounted within the frame and topped with a genuine Victorian brass carrying handle, making it both functional and decorative.
The central panel displays a beautifully hand-stitched floral needlepoint design, worked in soft, muted tones typical of the Victorian era. The arrangement features an overflowing urn of summer blooms including roses, tulips, and forget-me-nots, flanked by intricate foliate scrollwork. The background is a soft sage green, complementing the warm tones of the timber and lending the piece an understated elegance.
Originally designed to shield the face from the heat of the fire while protecting delicate complexions, pole screens such as this were also a statement of domestic taste and refinement. Today, it would serve equally well as a decorative accent in a period living room, hallway, or bedroom, or as an eye-catching display piece in a retail or hospitality setting.
Condition is very good for its age. The mahogany frame is sturdy and retains a well-preserved finish with only minor surface marks consistent with age and gentle use. The needlepoint panel is clean and intact, with no significant fading or fraying, showing only very light signs of age-related wear on close inspection. The brass handle has developed a mellow patina, enhancing the piece’s antique charm. The back panel is secure, and the screen stands evenly without wobble.
The depth of the feet means this is incredibly sturdy and stands well.
This is a beautifully preserved example of a Victorian domestic accessory, marrying functional purpose with decorative appeal, and would make a delightful addition to any antique furniture collection or traditional interior scheme.
