Charming piece of horse racing history. Entitled Col. E. W. Baird's "Wool Winder" by Martagon-St Windeline (W. Halsey up). It was printed by Gilbert Whitehead & Co. and appeared in the supplement to The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News May 30, 1908. The horse won the St. Leger in 1907, the rider, William Halsey (1867-1961), was a champion jump jockey.
It is set within an age worn and yet lovely gold frame. there are minor knocks and dents which give it an age worn vintage charm, yet it is perfectly robust and fits the subject really well.
It does look to have been framed shortly after 1908 as the frame has a solid sheets of pine as a backing which was still a backing method but on its way out.
The actual print is very well preserved for the age with minor signs of wear.
Please taken a good look at the images to check the condition.
