Wonderful vintage map of France, otherwise known as Gallia. Completed in 1598 - delightful engraving and handpainted finished map showing all of the ancient names of places. Fascinating to see. The print doesn't say who completed this gorgeous map at the turn of the 16th century. It is so delightful with its coats of arms, depictions of the main ports etc, Wonderful detail and so fine. A large print, definitely vintage print, in a wonderful mounted glazed vintage frame - the frame is black painted wood with lovely gold detail.
This old map of France is in fantastic condition. It certainly isn't an antique, but it is vintage and the frame suggests mid-century - so likely reproduced around then. Not a 21st century digital print. Wonderful condition and the colours are still so vibrant. The frame is also in exceptional condition. It isn't perfect, minor knocks and scrapes, but really VGC. Ready to hang etc.
The map labelling is in Latin with one inscription in bottom left saying the following :
Text reads "A new geographical description of the whole of Gaul, incompleted (collecting all that exists, with particulars for the description of the provinces) not without great labour and improvement, ... I was also a member, of the Academy and of the Parliament, each of which was distinguished by the Judiciary of Hondius anno 1600."
What a superb gift for a cartographer, map loving friend of family member, someone French? or someone who loves France. A geographer? Great size too so you can actually read the names!
