Large Vintage Copper Chestnut Roaster Fireplace Decoration
What a blast from the past. I remember when I first started selling vintage items in the late 80s these used to sell like hot cakes. Your regularly got fifty pounds for them which in today's money is one hundred and fifty pounds. How trends change and with it monetary values. I think since then because society has irrevocably speeded up, days where you can wile your time away cleaning your copper and brass just don't exist anymore to the normal person and I bet Brasso sales have collapsed in the last three decades! As with all trends, they do change and these will be back in fashion again. And why not they are fantastic! Anyway I digress and lament too much.
I would take this as early to mid 20th century, possibly late Victorian.
Wonderful turned handle which has a black patina to it that has worn in places, see images.
The actual roaster is very well preserved and the hinge still works absolutely fine. The front of it has been cleaned over the years and this will just either wipe over with a cloth and some brasso to get its shiny again. Although I know a lot of people would like the current age worn look.
The rear of the roaster not being cleaned in a long time and it is a very dark tarnished copper.
There is some newer string to the top so attached to the wall.
This would look perfect in a fireplace.
