Chinese lacquered cupboards like this are pieces of art, often combining functionality with elaborate craftsmanship. These cupboards were often found in upper class homes or were used as dowry furniture. The cupboard is made out of wood, most likely camphor, and has layers of lacquer on it. Red and black are traditional colours for this oriental furniture and symbolises good fortune, joy, happiness and wealth. Intricate hand painted designs of mythical dragons breathing fire in the clouds - representing power and renewal.
A generous storage space.
There is an attractive and ornate cross bar locking mechanism on the cupboard doors - helping to keep everything closed and in order. This is a vintage possibly even antique piece, I date it to the 1920s-50s, and the original lock and bar remain! It isn't in perfect condition with some knocks and nicks to the wooden finish, and some further marks on the main doors, however it is a hugely attractive piece.
The wood has been covered in a gesso before the lacquer and some of this has been damaged and you can see the white of the gesso where this has happened and in a few spots the wood.
Wonderful as an addition to an oriental themed room, a contemporary or traditional space in need of a splash of colour and intrigue. Clearly a very sought after piece if you are looking to bring prosperity, renewal and joy to your home or office!

Delivery is to the front door. Should the item be large the courier will need a hand your end or contact us and we will arrange a more expensive two man delivery.
