A wonderful quality, VGC, antique pottery jug with delightful black/grey transfer printing. In excellent condition considering it is almost 150 years old. Perfect as a jug or vase. Lovely black and white look making it easy to fit into many colour schemes - will also let the contents eg flowers steal the limelight.

It is decorated with transfer print with Prunus blossom sprays and two pictorial vignettes/paintings - one of a steam sail barque in harbour (signifying wealth, travel, New World) and a pastoral bridge landscape (signifying old England). There is an underside stamp saying Baltimore (amongst other pattern or potter marks) which suggest this item was likely made for American export - common at the time. Showing the old and new world together on the jug would resonate with buyers who had likely emigrated to the Americas in the late 1800s.

Likely made in Staffordshire but it is not clear which potter. There were many independent potters at the time so perhaps one of those. It is another fine example of British pottery made to last.

Size : 26cm h, 18cm w at widest point of the body, 22cm wide handle to spout
