Huge Vintage Painted Mahogany Over Mantel Late Victorian in Farrow and Ball Wimborne White.
A very impressive and top quality vintage over mantel mirror.
This was already painted when I bought it and I've added three coats of Farrow and Ball Wimborne White estate eggshell which has a soft sheen to it.
Farrow and Ball describe Wimborne White as follows-
This just off white is named after the market town of Wimborne in Dorset and home to Farrow & Ball. 'Only a shade away from a pure white, the addition of the smallest amount of warm yellow pigment creates a very versatile shade which is just a little softer than All White.'
Over the years this has almost certainly been reconfigured and was originally much larger. You'll see to the top there are holes which would have housed finials as ornamentation, probably with further decoration above those finials.
To the sides you will see four protruding pieces of wood to each side, this would have been where side shelves and further decoration was attached to it. Obviously at some point someone did not have a room large enough to house it properly and has chopped it down. But also it is very much the case that these days the fashion is less is more and quite often ornate pieces or furnishings have had the less fashionable ornate parts removed as contemporary fashion is is far more simple.
Halfway down the sides that are two holes that have been filled so there is a break in the flow of the fluted decoration.
Apart from that, as you can see in the images, the condition is very good. It is of superb quality. It would have cost an enormous amount of money when it was made. Despite some black spots to the very top of the mirror I have to say for the age the actual mirror glass is beautifully preserved and is a superb quality it is thick with a lovely decorative bevel.
There is a solid pile panel back and currently too there a place for attaching to the wall which you may well want to upgrade.
This is a superb piece of quality late Victorian furnishing hacked around a bit for the purposes of more contemporary fashionable decoration.
