Huge Vintage Antique Victorian Wall Over Mantel Mirror Ornate Decorations

This outstanding and ornate but functional over-mantel or wall mirror was generally found above mantlepieces. As this one is relatively thin, it might be used elsewhere in the house. Nevertheless, wherever you want it, this might be the perfect look and size.

Made in the 19th century, it is constructed of wood and covered in a moulded and decorative gesso decoration, including the original gold decoration. You often see the word stunning on online listings, but dare I suggest this actually is!

As with anything of this age and with such ornate protruding decoration, some of it has been lost. Here, you will see a video I made showing a more detailed look at the mirror and pointing out the various flaws.

It is not perfect, but to be honest, the missing pieces do not detract from the overall aesthetics of the piece, and the naked eye will not notice.

In summary, a few pieces of the gesso are missing from the decoration at the top, and although fully intact, the four ends of the two corner decorations to the aperture of the mirror curve out slightly. You may, of course, just regard that as a quirky part of the ageing process. Of course you may not!

Some of the edges have been rubbed a little where the white of the gesso shows through but again this is just part and parcel of the ageing process and actually means it looks like an antique and not a cheap imitation that's been just been imported from the Far East flooding the market these days.

Rather importantly this mirror is blessed by maintaining the thick original glass which is very well preserved. Many other similar mirrors suffer from a plague of black spotting and general deterioration to the silver behind the glass. This certainly does not and it is in fantastic condition.
