Huge Imposing Victorian Mahogany Fire Screen with Bird of Paradise Embroidery Needlework.

https://youtu.be/9Whx0jTLTJg

This is an impressive and elegant piece from the 19th century, reflecting both the opulence and craftsmanship of the era.

The screen is constructed from rich, deep-toned mahogany wood, polished to a high shine.

Mahogany was prized during the Victorian period for its durability and luxurious appearance.

The frame features intricate carvings in the corners and fluted lengths.

This fire screen is particularly large, likely standing taller and wider than most, adding to its imposing presence. It would have been a striking piece in a Victorian parlour or sitting room, intended to serve as both a functional barrier against the heat of the fire and a decorative object.

The needlework is an intricate embroidery. This exotic bird, known for its vibrant plumage and striking appearance, would have been a symbol of beauty, luxury, and perhaps even escape into a faraway land. The embroidery has been done in silk or wool threads, with the colours to capture the bird’s distinctive feathers. The stitching is detailed, likely in techniques such as satin stitch, long and short stitch, or French knots to give texture and depth to the bird and surrounding elements like foliage or flowers.

The frame is well preserved, and the wide legs mean it stands well. There's a small piece of wear to the top right, where the wood is slightly lighter.

The embroidery is also in very good condition with the colours still vibrant.

It is glazed in the images, but the glass has been subsequently removed.

The piece embodies Victorian design sensibilities, which favoured elaborate, ornate, and highly decorative items. The overall appearance would be grand, with the embroidery acting as a centrepiece, while the mahogany frame anchors the piece with a sense of solidity and sophistication.

This fire screen would have been as much an expression of wealth and taste as it was a practical household item.
