Outstanding Vintage Victorian Frame and Mirror

This is an exceptional vintage Victorian frame and mirror.

At some point, the original mirror perished, and a thick replacement glass has been professionally set and secured in place. Please note that there is no backing wood. If this mirror still retained its original glass and backing, it would likely be valued at £2-2,500.

The most important aspect is that the stunning Victorian frame remains in remarkably good condition overall.

The main frame is made of pine, covered in moulded gesso, and still retains its original finish.

As seen in the photographs, the top half is very well preserved, with only minor wear to the rear corners.

There are some losses to the gesso, including:

A missing piece on the bottom left rear upright.
Two further missing sections along the bottom stretch.
Some discoloration on a small patch of the inner decoration on the left-hand side.
Additional missing gesso on the main decorative stretch, where you can see the lighter layer beneath.
Some wear to the bottom right corner of the finish, although it remains mostly intact.
A previous repair on the upright, where a small moulding section is missing.

Most of these imperfections can be easily concealed with a good-quality acrylic gold paint. You might opt for a lighter gold and blend in some black ink for a more authentic match, or use a darker gold, which should naturally blend into the frame’s overall aged patina.

So, while not perfect, this frame possesses what we call in the trade “age-worn characteristics,” which enhance its antique appeal, though of course, you may have your own perspective on that!

I have priced this sensibly, taking into account the minor blemishes and the fact that the mirror glass is a replacement. One must remember that in many antique mirrors, replacement glass is common, as the original silvered backing often deteriorates over time.

To either side of the frame are two brass mirror plates. Obviously, this can be hung either way to suit.

This will cost us between £60-80 so if you wish collect from Lewes in East Sussex we will refund the saved courier charges.
The couriers will arrange a day and time window with you.
Delivery is to the front door. Should the item be large the courier will need a hand your end or contact us and we will arrange a more expensive two man delivery.
It will take about 2 weeks.
