This charming hand-painted vintage shelf is a unique piece of functional decor. Likely dating from the mid-20th century, this wall-mounted wooden shelf has been thoughtfully updated with a fresh yet character rich finish, offering both visual warmth and everyday practicality.

It features two fixed open shelves that are ideal for displaying books, jars, crockery, toiletries, or collectibles in a hallway, bathroom, kitchen, child’s bedroom, or creative studio. Whether placed freestanding or wall-hung, this compact shelving unit brings soft charm and unique hand-finished character to any space.

I have applied two coats of undercoat and three topcoats of Farrow and Ball Wimborne White estate eggshell. Farrow and Ball describe Wimborne White as follows: This just off white is named after the market town of Wimborne in Dorset and home to Farrow & Ball. "Only a shade away from a pure white, the addition of the smallest amount of warm yellow pigment creates a very versatile shade which is just a little softer than All White."

The edges and shelf fronts have been highlighted in an artist’s acrylic gold, which has been carefully wire woolled to soften the shine and leave a lightly distressed, subtly worn finish that beautifully complements the white base coat. This creates a timeworn, shabby chic appeal that adds quiet character without overwhelming the space.

This is a hand-painted piece, so expect visible brush strokes and minor idiosyncrasies in the surface texture, hallmarks of the artisan process and not machine perfection. The result is a lovingly revived vintage shelf with an intentional, textured finish.

In terms of condition, the structure is sturdy, with wear consistent with previous life and vintage age. There are small imperfections in the wood beneath the painted finish, adding to its nostalgic appeal. The edges show some lightly rubbed paintwork, in keeping with the intentional shabby chic aesthetic.

This piece can be wall-mounted using fixings appropriate to your wall type (fixings not included), or placed freestanding on a countertop or work surface. It’s ideal for those seeking a small but eye-catching vintage shelving unit with charm and utility in equal measure.
