Wonderful rare Baxter's Patented Print entitled The Hop Garden published 1856. The Baxter process was perfected in the 1800s by George Baxter - it was a unique process of layering colour block on colour block to create the final image and hues. This printing process made prints and art more affordable to the wider public. This print is of a Hope party possibly in Kent - collecting, washing and drying the hops - children and all. Delightful piece of countryside history. Framed ina wonderful vintage oak frame and ready to hang.
The Hope Garden was painted by Creswick and was then printed by Baxter using his patented process. The original painting is in the V&A museum. A lovely painting showing rural life in England. With these superb prints, you can see the detail of the painting and can feel the energy and fun (and hard work) of the families during hop picking.
The print is in very good condition, and is in a slightly marked creamy white thick mount. The frame is lovely golden oak with a silver type inlay - not sure how old the frame is, possibly early to mid 1900s. It is glazed and is ready to hang - it has some marks commensurate with age.
Overall a delightfully sweet picture. Perfect for a smaller space on your wall or to join a collection of smaller similar pictures. See photos and video. Thanks
