Truly lovely original water colour painted by Madeline Pothecary, British artist, possible around the early to mid 1900s. Pothecary was an excellent artist who painted water colours and oils, often depicting landscapes such as this one. Her landscapes were often of areas in the South of England, so this is possible a landscape of the North Downs, or the Weald. It is a wonderful painting of possibly dusk - muted blues and greys and green tones. Mounted and framed.
Pothecary exhibited her works between 1931 and 1939, indicating her active period in the British art scene. Every now and again one of her works goes to auction, a recent sale at auction was in 2017. Unfortunately there is not much more information available about Pothecary although it is clear her work is still highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts.
This particular piece is in excellent condition. I honestly think the painting itself is in outstanding condition. Yes the mount is aged and the hand drawn frame around the edge is faded, but it is still very presentable - it is a beige, light brown colour, very synonymous with the era. The lovely wooden frame has such charm about it, it is simple in its lines and it allows the attention to be drawn to the painting rather than the frame. The frame has signs of age, top left small piece is missing, few other scratches and marks, but it too is still very presentable. The board at the back is the original and is a little loose, probably just needs some fresh pins to tighten it. Original string seems sound for hanging.
So all in all, a very lovely and well executed painting by a British artist. From the early to mid 1900s. A really charming antique / vintage piece to be enjoyed. Please see photos and video.
