Superb early 1900s treasure chest or vintage storage trunk! Small so easy to find a space for this fabulous box. Likely to have been used as a tuck box either for a child at boarding school (I think one label suggests this may well have been a use at some point), uni student or possibly a soldier? Seems an appropriate size for that or for something similar - not really big enough for lots of clothes unless it was for a small child. Intriguing! After all these years it is still in good condition - carries signs of wear, but closes well and is still very sturdy. Good for modern day storage, maybe small coffee table, theatre or tv prop!
Some personal history with this box - see various labels - been to Wakefield and Lincoln in its time. Great to imagine what stories and times the box has seen.
As mentioned, the box has definitely been used and has housed numerous items. No doubt some interesting and some not so much. Being almost 100 yrs old this is not surprising! It is made of a light wood, early plastic edging and metal fittings and handles. The metal has a rusted finish now but still works fine - although some WD40 wouldn't go amiss. The locks close as does the latch. The inside is papered and there is some staining and a piece missing on the bottom.
Worth noting that the black latch seem a later addition - see the screws inside on the lid and bottom. Maybe the key to the locks was lost and the trunk still needed locking so this latch was added.
This is a great small trunk for use as per original function! alternatively as a toy box, coffee table, vintage storage box in a bathroom or bedroom or playroom! or a theatre prop, dressing up box etc. Versatile!
