Collectible "Rutland", Victorian Doulton Tureen - J.S. Patent - 1886-1902 coronet stamp - VGC

Wonderful piece of history. A blue and white Doulton (of Royal Doulton fame) tureen in blue and white. Made and designed by J. Slater hence the J.S Patent stamp underside. Also made in late 1800s when Doulton was appointed as Potter to HRH Prince of Wales - see coronet underside. In wonderful antique conditio - perfect as a serving bowl, comes with lid.

The "Rutland" pattern by Doulton Burslem, introduced in the late 19th century, often features the "Doulton & Slater's Patent" mark. This indicates the use of a decorative technique developed by John Slater, Doulton's Art Director from 1887 to 1914. The method involved impressing lace into the clay to create intricate textures, which were then enhanced with colored glazes and gilding.

Pieces bearing both the "Rutland" pattern designation and the "Doulton & Slater's Patent" mark are notable for their artistic and technical innovation. This tureen comes with a delicately crafted lid and is perfect for soups, stews, side dishes. Perhaps as an addition to an existing set, or perhaps a standalone accent for a mix and match service. In great condition - one tiny chip to bottom side of a handle, can hardly see it, no other chips or cracks or glazing; some fading to the transfer but not much - typical of quality china. The bowl rim has some rough areas, from use and production.
