Smashing large oval vintage lamp shade. Likely from the 1960s or 70s. It is a little bit boudoir in look due to its sumptuous colouring and lacey finish. A very unusual shape – large oval shape but with eight sides, so octagonal and it also has a slight splay to it, bringing a little bit of Empire line to it too. It is large measuring 56cm x 46cm wide and deep which means it is a shade that means business and can go on top of a large standard lamp. It is in lovely vintage condition, vintage of course, but it isn’t perfect – see below – nothing some tlc won’t fix though.
It is a lovely golden colour, golden sheen material as a base layer, covered on the outside in a golden lacy. Finished with a golden detailed finish around the top, and a golden tassel finish on the bottom. The bottom also comes adorned with multi coloured tassels – golden. Beige/cream and sultry red. This is why I say it is a little boudoiresque as the colours are reminiscent of a French salon, rich and golden and romantic.
The actual lace and tassels are in vgc. The inside lining is however marked in places and a couple of small tears, some marks can be seen through the lace but only if you are up very close, any wear and age signs may never actually be noticed. The frame has been slightly bent in one area, making the material finish in that area loose. I think this is quite easy to bend back into shape, or ensure this side of the shade is against the wall so no one notices! The frame structure which sits on the actual lamp base has four prongs, and a centre ring. One prong is loose from the ring – this could be permanently welded back together, may not actually matter and can stay as is, or can be super glued or taped back into place.
This shade is unusual and delightful. It is well worth making the effort to address any minor issues and display it. It has romance and mystique in abundance, was probably bespoke and specially commissioned at one time, so definitely needs to be used again.
