An outstanding oval gold mirror.
It has been recently upcycled and given a fresh lease of life. The original finish on the front had dulled over the years, picking up various imperfections and knocks. To restore it, I carefully worked the surface with wire wool, revealing the lighter gold underneath and, in raised areas, exposing the gesso.
The frame is made of wood and was originally covered in moulded gesso, onto which the gold was applied.
On the sides, I have left the original gold, which, as you can see in the photos, is considerably darker. I chose to preserve this as I believe it’s important to maintain as much of the historic original finish as possible, ensuring the mirror retains its integrity.
There are a few minor imperfections, including a couple of tiny dings that are barely noticeable. However, there is a small repair at approximately 4 o’clock on the lower right-hand side.
The original bevelled glass remains in good condition, with just a few small black spots, which are to be expected on a mirror of this age. These marks are few and far between, adding to its authenticity. The mirror has had a replacement back fitted and includes two brass mirror plates, which you may wish to change. These can easily be removed or repositioned should you prefer to display the mirror in a different orientation.
This is a beautiful and unique mirror, blending contemporary elegance with antique charm.
