This is a charming antique wooden fire screen with original hand-stitched needlepoint tapestry panel, dating from the early 20th century (circa 1920s–1930s). These decorative firescreens were traditionally placed in front of open hearths to shield sitters from the direct heat of the fire and to add elegance to the fireplace setting. This screen is in wonderful condition with the most intricate and pretty needlepoint in it - dragons? or griffins?
The screen features a dark-stained hardwood frame, likely mahogany, with gently splayed feet and a shaped handle cut-out to the top, making it easy to move. The centre is filled with a fine needlepoint tapestry panel in soft muted shades of pink, cream, tan, and pale blue. The design features a mythical griffin-like creature amongst scrolling foliage and stylised floral motifs – a delightful example of period needlework.
The screen is not glazed so the tapestry is exposed, preventing any chance of glass breaking in transit or if the screen is ever knocked over. It remains in good vintage condition overall, with some small signs of wear appropriate to age, adding to its authentic patina and charm. The wooden frame is sturdy, though with minor surface marks as expected from use.
This is a wonderful decorative piece for a traditional or vintage-inspired interior. It would look beautiful placed beside a fireplace, in a bedroom, or even as a statement piece in a hallway. Truly attractive and super functional.
