Antique watercolour of Welsh mountainside by R T J Chancellor, 1873 signed and dated, antique wooden gesso glazed frame

It is very hard to describe this wonderful painting. It is truly beautiful and so delicately done. Painted in 1873 by the artist R T J Chancellor. An antique depiction of what I believe to be the Welsh countryside and mountains. Maybe the Brecons or Snowdonia. The reason I have settled on Wales, is because of the two figures walking on the left of the painting in what I think is Welsh traditional dress.

The detail and delicacy of the painting has to be seen - I have tried to show it in the photos, but it is so subtle I hope it comes through. The foreground is much brighter and bolder than the background which gently disappears into the distance. The trees and leaves are so clearly seen. It is lovely and of course it is exquisitely framed by a lovely antique gesso wooden frame, which is still glazed and has its original wooden backing.

I haven't been able to find much out about the artist, possibly a good amateur painter of the time, or perhaps a Master and I have just been hapless in my research.

The painting has some discolouration on the right hand side - not sure if this is on the glass or some sort of light damage to the actual painting. The painting can still be displayed as is, it is antique after all and a little sign of its age is acceptable and charming. The frame is actually in pretty good condition with its antiqued gilt effect on the gesso - however it is missing a couple of bits, noticeably top left corner and some other smaller areas. As above, nothing that prevents this antique piece from being displayed and appreciated.

The painting is ready to hang, and be appreciated by those with a love of vintage and antique art, an affection for Wales or general beautiful places, or someone who actually knows more about Chancellor.
