A superb, high-quality three-piece, two-fold vanity screen or room divider from the early 1900s, likely from the Gothic Revival and Arts & Crafts period. This striking piece celebrates medieval design and motifs, featuring Latin manuscripts and music sheets printed on one side. A beautifully reversible design allows for appreciation from both angles. It is a very heavy, solidly standing screen, crafted with fine details that indicate its age, including exquisite hinges, slotted screws with finials, and late Victorian-inspired flocked paper. Likely made of oak, it is a piece of true craftsmanship.
The Latin script side is particularly striking, with bold decorative writing and music graphics. It may have been created as a tribute to ecclesiastical history, reinforcing the neo-Gothic aesthetic. The craquelure on the printed manuscripts enhances its antiquated feel, while the flocked paper on the reverse offers a rich Victorian texture, giving the user flexibility in styling their space. This screen was likely used in a high-society home.
The craftsmanship is further highlighted by the use of slotted screws in the hinges, which pre-date Phillips screws that became standard from the 1930s. These screws, along with the long, rounded-edge hinges, are characteristic of late Victorian and Arts & Crafts design.
This wide and tall screen is ideal as a room divider, fitting beautifully into a bedroom, living room, office, or open-plan studio. Measuring 158cm in height, with each of its three panels at 50cm wide, it is substantial in both size and weight.
Condition: As an antique piece, it shows signs of use and wear. The wood and hinges remain sound, and it stands and folds well. The flocked paper shows varying degrees of wear across the panels, with some areas more worn than others. The manuscript side retains good color and detail, though both sides have some marks and small areas of missing material. While not in pristine condition, it remains a charming and intriguing piece with a strong presence and quality craftsmanship.
