A superb quality three-piece two-fold vanity screen or room divider from the early 1900s, likely from the arts and crafts period.
The front (or back) has an original flock wallpaper finish, the rear celebrates medieval design and motifs, featuring Latin manuscripts and music sheets printed on one side.
The gorgeous green and cream flocked paper is on the other side. A beautifully reversible design allows it to be appreciated from both sides. it is a very heavy, solidly standing screen, likely made of oak, with wonderful elongated hinges and slotted screws with finials, indicative of its age.
Flock paper was popular in well-to-do homes during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, aligning with the suggested era of this screen. The raised, soft velvety patterns on a plain background promoted a sense of craftsmanship and luxury. This particular screen features green and gold patterns on a grey-beige background, a design that would have been considered quite opulent in its time.
The craquelure on the printed manuscripts enhances their antique feel, reinforcing the medieval and gothic revival aesthetic. The combination of medieval script and flocked paper allows the user to choose which side best complements their decor. Likely used in a high-society home, this screen is both a functional and decorative piece.
The slotted screws used in the hinges pre-date Phillips screws, which became common in the 1930s. they are not only practical but also add to the overall craftsmanship. the long hinges with rounded edges are also characteristic of the late victorian and arts and crafts period.
These wide and tall screens are ideal as room dividers, making them perfect for a bedroom, living room, office, or open-plan studio. This particular screen is substantial in both size and weight, standing at 158cm tall and with each of its three panels measuring 50cm wide.
As an antique piece, it shows signs of use and wear. The wood and hinges remain sound, and it stands and folds well. The flocked paper has varying degrees of wear across the panels, with some areas more worn than others. The pattern is visible on all panels, though the raised detail is worn flat in some places. The manuscript side retains good colour and overall wear, but both sides have minor marks and small areas of missing material. while not in pristine condition, it remains a charming and high-quality piece with an intriguing character.
size: 158cm tall, approximately 150cm wide when fully open. each panel is 50cm wide, with a depth of 2.5cm per panel. when folded, the depth is 8cm.
