This beautifully proportioned late 19th-century Victorian display cabinet is crafted in rich, solid mahogany with a warm patina that only develops through well over a century of use. The single glazed door retains its original glass, top-quality and thick Victorian glass, framed by an elegant carved scrollwork border with decorative flourishes along the top and bottom edges. On either side of the door, finely carved corbels with acanthus detail add to the cabinet’s classical appeal, showcasing the skill of Victorian cabinetmakers.
The cabinet features two removable shelves inside, making it ideal for displaying treasured books, ceramics, glassware, or small collectables. Its compact size means it would fit beautifully in a hallway, sitting room, study, or even a bedroom, while still offering an impressive focal point. The interior is painted in a dark finish, offering contrast and depth to whatever is displayed inside. You can, of course, remove one of the shelves. Please note one of the supports is missing and is replaced by a makeshift dowel.
It is an interesting piece in that the sides have had two rosewood panels applied with no reason to suggest why. The top is an old piece of stained pine which suits well, but is also a later addition.
Condition is consistent with age and use. The mahogany has a deep, rich tone, with some wear, scratches, and small surface marks on the top, commensurate with more than 120 years of history. The carved areas show minor knocks and age-related shrinkage splits but remain structurally sound. The original glass has some light age-related imperfections but is clear and intact. The back panels show signs of age, including warping and wear, entirely typical for an authentic antique. The door closes securely on its original hinge, and the cabinet stands solid and level.
Some pieces of the scrollwork are missing around the glass, this only really notices on close inspection.
So very much perfectly imperfect. A fantastic size, an outstandingly attractive piece that has undergone surgery over the years.
To the bottom of the left and right plinths there are some small pieces of veneer missing.
Dating from around 1880–1890, this is both a practical storage piece and a decorative antique that will add Victorian character to any home. It would work equally well as a small bookcase, display cabinet for fine china or curios, or even as a unique drinks cabinet for a period-inspired interior.
