This exquisite antique nursing chair is a fine example of Victorian design from the Aesthetic Movement period, dating to around the 1870s. Constructed from rich, solid mahogany, the chair features a bold and highly unusual T-shaped back, exquisitely framed with carved scrollwork and showcasing the movement's appreciation for refined decorative art. The back and seat are both upholstered in a jacquard-woven damask fabric with a striking burgundy and gold botanical motif, a pattern typical of the late 19th century, adding an opulent texture and colour balance.

Originally intended for use in a bedroom or nursery as a nursing or ladies' slipper chair, its low seat height and armless form were designed to allow freedom of movement while sitting close to the ground – making it ideal for activities such as dressing, nursing infants, or quiet reading. Today, it serves just as well as a unique accent chair in a hallway, bedroom, or eclectic sitting room setting, lending immediate historic charm and dramatic visual appeal.

The chair is structurally sound with well-turned front legs and sabre-shaped rear supports, all original. The finish on the wood retains a pleasing patina, with signs of gentle wear consistent with age, including small surface knocks and some loss to the polish, most notably along the top edges and feet. There is evidence of previous minor restoration, including historical reinforcement to the joints and trim. The upholstery remains tight but shows some sun fading, minor fray to one corner of the trim, and moderate wear to the seat pad. The underside webbing is partly damaged and would benefit from replacement if intended for daily use, although it currently remains functional for decorative seating.

The underside webbing has failed—while it still supports weight and can be sat on safely, the seat does sag slightly.

A rare collector's piece that beautifully captures the spirit and craftsmanship of the Victorian Aesthetic era, this chair would enhance any collection of period furniture or suit a stylish interior seeking antique character.
